Nha Trang Weather in February: Dry Days, Stronger Sun and a Calmer Sea

February is a good month for the beach and the islands in Nha Trang. It is dry, the days are warming up and the sea is calmer than in January. The catch is that spells of northeast wind can still make the sea rough for several days, so keep a spare day or two. The coming Lunar New Year (Tết) also falls early in the month. Beaches and the tourist pier get crowded then, and rooms near the sea fill up early.

On clear February mornings, the hills of Hon Tre (Hòn Tre) Island stand out across the bay. The sand on Tran Phu Beach dries and warms as the sun climbs, and the sea breeze still moves through the palms. A few times a month it picks up, and the whitecaps roll in thick again.

(*) Waves are the daily maximum significant wave height. Waves and sea temperature come from marine model data for a point in the bay about 10 km offshore, not the waves breaking where you stand, and with only two or three years of data they are a rough guide. All figures describe the climate over several years, not a forecast for your week.

February rainfall: low, with no clear advantage early or late in the month #

In ten years of data, eight Februaries had 50 mm (2 in) of rain or less, and February 2022 was a little above, at about 72 mm (2.8 in). The wettest was 2017, with about 117 mm (4.6 in) falling on February 2 alone. Most rainy days bring only a few millimeters, and fewer than two days in a typical February get 5 mm or more.

The hourly data show about three days in four staying almost dry between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The first and second halves of the month average similar totals (about 26 and 24 mm). These averages do not show a clear reason to favor the first or second half of the month.

Looking ahead, the seasonal outlook issued on October 15, 2026 by Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting expects 10-20 mm less rain than the long-term average across central Vietnam in February and March 2027, and temperatures across the country generally 1-2°C (2-4°F) above average from February to April 2027. These are trends for a wide region, not a substitute for the forecast a few days before you go.

Can you swim in Nha Trang in February? #

Yes, on days when the beach is open for swimming. The bay is still about 5°C (9°F) cooler than in May. The water may feel cool at first, especially if you are used to warmer tropical seas.

In the 2022-2024 model sample, rough days did not come evenly but in spells of a few days, when the northeast monsoon strengthened. One spell, from February 21 to 27, 2022, lasted almost a week. Spells turned up early, mid-month and late, and the data are too few to say which half is calmer.

Do not assume Tet brings the best sea of the month. During Tet 2026 the weather was sunny and warm, but the sea stayed rough for most of the break, with waves of around 2 m at times and no-swimming flags along the beach. Between February 17 and 22, 2026, lifeguards on the Tran Phu and Pham Van Dong (Phạm Văn Đồng) beaches brought 20 people back to shore after waves and rip currents pulled them out. Five needed hospital treatment, according to the provincial newspaper Bao Khanh Hoa (Báo Khánh Hòa).

Rip currents are more likely when the waves are big, so learn how to get out of a rip before you travel. Check the latest wave, wind and UV readings before heading down, then follow the flags and the lifeguards on the beach.

Island trips and diving in February #

Good island days are easier to find than in January, but keep the plan flexible. Tour boats sail only when departures are permitted. If strong winds or rough seas are forecast, move the trip, even if you have already paid. Book an island trip once the forecast for the next day or two is clear, and ask what happens if the boat cannot sail (refund or new date). Avoid the day before your flight home. Wear a life jacket for the whole crossing. If you cannot swim, stay on the boat during swim stops.

Over Tet, the pier gets very busy: on the fourth day of Tet 2026, the Nha Trang tourist pier handled more than 10,000 passengers. If you are going on those days, book ahead and confirm the pickup point and sailing time.

The 2022-2024 model sample shows more low-wave days in March, worth weighing if diving is the main reason for your trip. Treat that as a planning clue, and confirm conditions at the dive site with your operator shortly before the trip. In February, we suggest booking your dive or snorkel trip early in your stay, so there is time to rebook if waves cancel it.

Lunar New Year in February: rooms, traffic and opening hours #

The first day of the Year of the Goat is Saturday, February 6, 2027, and the public-sector holiday runs from Thursday, February 4 to Wednesday, February 10.

By day 5 of Tet 2026, four- and five-star hotels on Tran Phu and Pham Van Dong streets were almost full, with sea-view rooms booked through days 6 and 7, the newspaper Tuoi Tre (Tuổi Trẻ) reported on February 21, 2026. Scooter rentals (about VND300,000 a day) had run out, and traffic backed up in places on Tran Phu, Biet Thu (Biệt Thự) and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai (Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai) streets.

For Tet 2027, especially February 7-10 (days 2-5), book early on a free-cancellation rate and ask in advance about Tet surcharges and compulsory New Year's Eve dinners. Staying within walking distance of the beach beats sitting in a taxi in that traffic. Many restaurants and shops close for the first few days, and banks, markets and sights each keep their own hours.

Vietjet's announced Tet travel period runs until February 20, 2027; check fares and availability for your particular route, and sort out how you will get to Nha Trang early. If you do not need to be there for Tet, arrive from February 11, when public-sector staff are back at work and more restaurants have reopened.

What to wear and pack for February #

Days around 27°C (80°F) are T-shirt and shorts weather. Temperatures barely change from January, but there is less cloud and daily solar radiation is roughly a fifth higher, so the sun feels much stronger on the beach or on a boat. Some nights run well below the average: from February 6 to 10, 2018, they dropped to around 17-18°C (63-64°F), with a low of 16.8°C (62°F).

  • A light windbreaker or long-sleeved top for seafront evenings and boat trips.
  • Swimwear and a large towel; a long-sleeved rash guard for long stretches in the water.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees if you plan to visit pagodas or the Po Nagar towers around Tet.

Who February suits #

February suits a beach holiday without the heat, if you can live with a few windy days. If the sea is the point of your trip and your dates can move, March or April makes good days easier to find. You can compare all twelve months before you book.

On rough days, the same windy-day plans as in January still work: a mud bath, a museum, or watching the surf at Hon Chong (Hòn Chồng). There, stay on the paths and well back from the rock edge.

How the figures were calculated #

The temperature, rain and wind figures come from historical weather data via Open-Meteo (its default blend of reanalysis models) for central Nha Trang, covering all 283 February days from 2015 to 2024. This is gridded data, not readings from a beach station. Waves and sea temperature come from the same provider's marine model.

Nha Trang weather in February: FAQ #

Are there typhoons in Nha Trang in February?

They are rare. The national forecasting center's seasonal outlook of October 15, 2026 sees little chance of typhoons or tropical depressions in the South China Sea from February to April 2027. Rough seas in February mostly come from spells of stronger northeast monsoon wind.

What time of day does it usually rain in February?

In the 2015-2024 hourly data, almost half of February's rain fell between 6 a.m. and noon, and only about a tenth in the evening. Even so, about eight mornings in ten stay almost dry, so there is no need to move morning plans for rain.

How warm is the sea in Nha Trang in February?

About 25-26°C (77-79°F), according to marine model data for a point in the bay: about 25.1°C in February 2023 and 26.1°C in February 2024.
