Nha Trang Photo Spots: When to Shoot, What to Wear and Drone Rules

Start on the beach around sunrise, visit the east-facing towers of Po Nagar (Tháp Bà Ponagar) in the morning, then try Hon Chong (Hòn Chồng) in late-afternoon light. Cloud cover may change the plan, so leave room to adjust.

Fishing boats moored on the Cai River (sông Cái) near its mouth, with Tran Phu (Trần Phú) Bridge behind, late afternoon in February 2010.

At sunrise on Tran Phu Beach, shooting out to sea can turn people into silhouettes. Shooting along the shore gives you a different angle to the light, so plan your direction as well as your time: in Nha Trang, morning light comes in off the sea and afternoon light from the hills. For daily sunrise and sunset times, see our sunrise and sunset tool.

Early morning: Tran Phu Beach and the Xom Chut seawall

Beyond the sunrise, look for beach life: early swimmers and residents exercising on the sand. Ask before taking a close-up.

For a clean line of coast and palm trees, stand on the pavement of the seafront park and shoot along the shore. For a swim afterward, use a buoyed area with lifeguards on duty and follow the flags; check which beach to use and when.

About 4-5 km south along Tran Phu, toward Cau Da (Cầu Đá) port, the Xom Chut seawall, also called the Vinh Nguyen (Vĩnh Nguyên) seawall, is free to visit. In summer 2026, dozens of people were queuing there by 5:30-6 am on some mornings for its view over the bay. Fishermen still moor boats and mend nets here, so shoot quickly, keep the path clear and stay off their gear.

7-9 am: the river mouth, Po Nagar and Dam Market

From Tran Phu Bridge, look inland up the Cai River: the morning sun behind you lights the hulls of the fishing boats moored along the banks. Stop on the footpath, never in a traffic lane.

On the Po Nagar terrace, the main faces of the towers look east and catch the morning sun. An early visit may also mean fewer tour groups.

For dried-seafood stalls, head to the newer three-story Dam Market beside the old circular building. The hall is dim, so work near an entrance where daylight comes in. Ask vendors before a close-up and put the camera away if anyone waves you off; for children, ask the adult with them.

Late afternoon: Hon Chong, the cathedral, the cable car

With your back to the mountains, low afternoon sun falls across the Hon Chong boulders and turns the rock warm. The famous stacked boulders usually draw a queue. From a dry, stable position within the visitor area and well back from the water, try a lower camera angle to include more sky.

Nha Trang Cathedral, officially Christ the King Cathedral, has gray stone walls that look best in slanting light. It is a working church: check Mass times at the gate, do not shoot during services and keep your voice down on the grounds.

From the cable car to Hon Tre, you can photograph the bay below (the cable car is closed for maintenance from October 26 to November 10, 2026, with speedboats to the island instead). Shooting through the glass, press the lens against it and wear something dark to cut reflections.

Sunset and after dark

To photograph the setting sun, look for an open view toward the western mountains; a rooftop near the beach can help. After dark, Tram Huong Tower lights up on April 2 Square, and the seafront lights along Tran Phu suit long exposures; keep your tripod on the pavement, out of the road.

What to wear for each setting #

Colors that contrast with the background are the easiest way to make people stand out. Po Nagar and the cathedral are places of worship, so dress for them before you leave the hotel.

SettingWhat worksNotes
Beach, rooftopsRed, yellow, orange or white against the water; light, flowing dressesOften windy; choose clothes you can move in comfortably
Po NagarWhite, cream or pale green against the red brick; an ao dai works well hereChoose a top that covers your shoulders and trousers or a below-knee skirt. The site requires modest dress and provides free cover-ups
Nha Trang CathedralPastels and plain colors against the gray stoneDress modestly and follow any guidance at the gate
Hon Chong rocksAnkle-length dress or trousers; shoes with good gripNo flip-flops on wet rock
Dam Market, old streetsSimple, plain clothes; flat shoesCarry your bag in front and stay out of the vendors' way

In a group, a shared palette, say white and beige or soft pastels, looks tidier than everyone in a different style. For weather-related packing, see what to pack for each season.

Hiring a photographer: what to ask first #

Book a session for early morning or late afternoon, while the light is still low. Before you confirm, we suggest asking:

  • How many color-edited photos and how many fully retouched ones, and whether you get all the original files.
  • How long delivery takes, how files are sent and how long the download link lasts.
  • How long the session runs, how many locations, and how travel between them is charged.
  • Who pays entry fees, which locations need permission for a commercial shoot, and whether that has been arranged. At VinWonders, commercial filming and photography need prior approval from the park's management.
  • Whether makeup, outfit rental or props are included.
  • What happens if it rains or the sea is rough: a new date or a refunded deposit.
  • Whether your photos will appear on the photographer's pages or in ads.

Ask to see a full set delivered to a past client, not just a few highlights, to judge consistency. Agree on a payment method and deposit amount, and keep the receipt; we suggest paying only part up front and the rest once you have all the photos. Confirm the price, deliverables and cancellation terms in writing. As a price reference, a visitor told Dan Tri in July 2026 that photographers at the Xom Chut seawall charged about VND500,000 per session; packages with makeup, outfits or several locations will differ.

Drones: can you fly one? #

Since July 1, 2026, Vietnam's Law on People's Air Defense has required every drone to be registered with the police before use, with no exemption by weight. Under Circular 78/2026/TT-BCA, you apply in person or online, then bring the drone in to receive a registration certificate.

Drones under 250 g

A drone with a maximum takeoff weight under 0.25 kg is exempt from a flight permit only when all three conditions are met: it is flown for recreation, within the pilot's line of sight, and outside no-fly and restricted zones. In that case no pilot license is needed. If the flight affects military or civil aviation, the local military, the police and the air traffic control unit for the area must be notified. Many small drones stay under 250 g only with the standard battery.

Drones of 250 g and over

The pilot must be at least 18 and hold a pilot license. For a typical photography flight, the Ministry of National Defense issues a permit for a specific purpose and location, valid for up to 30 days, and your flights must stay within a valid permit. Applications normally require at least seven days' notice, or twelve days where an aviation notice is required. Permits issued under the previous rules remain valid on their original terms.

Foreign visitors and bringing a drone into Vietnam

A foreigner flying a drone in Vietnam needs a Vietnamese agency, organization or individual as guarantor, but a guarantor does not replace registration or flight permission. Circular 78/2026 provides for registration by foreign owners, and for temporary registration of drones used in Vietnam for under 60 days at events such as conferences, exhibitions, sport or tourism, when approved by the competent authority. Before bringing a drone, confirm which registration procedure applies to your visit and what flight permissions you need.

Importing a drone, even temporarily, requires a license from the provincial People's Committee. We have not confirmed how these requirements apply to a visitor's drone carried in personal luggage, so ask customs at your arrival airport before you travel.

No-fly zones and fines

Check every launch point against the no-fly and restricted zones at cambay.mod.gov.vn, even with a sub-250 g drone; no-fly signs, some bilingual, now stand around Cam Ranh International Airport. Binh Ba (Bình Ba) and Binh Hung (Bình Hưng) islands lie within the security zone of the Cam Ranh military base: do not fly there or photograph military installations.

Fines for individuals under Article 8 of Decree 282/2025/ND-CP are below; organizations pay double. The table summarizes penalties under Article 8; the applicable provision and penalty are determined by the competent authority.

Violation (Article 8)Fine
Using a drone not registered or licensed to fly, organizing flights without a license, or flying a registered drone outside the permitted time, place, area or limits (Article 8(2)(đ))VND2-3 million; the drone may be confiscated
Filming or photographing prohibited sites or areas related to defense or security (Article 8(5)(c))VND6-8 million; may be confiscated
Using a drone to film or photograph from the air without permission (Article 8(6))VND8-9 million; may be confiscated; flight permit suspended for 3-6 months
Conducting drone flights without a flight permit issued by the competent authority (Article 8(10)(a))VND20-30 million; may be confiscated

Nha Trang photography FAQ #

Which Nha Trang photo spots are free?

Tran Phu Beach, the Xom Chut seawall, Tran Phu Bridge, Nha Trang Cathedral and April 2 Square are free; Po Nagar and Hon Chong charge admission.

Do I need to wear an ao dai to photograph Po Nagar?

No. The site requires modest dress and provides free cover-ups; a top that covers your shoulders, with trousers or a below-knee skirt, is a safe choice. An ao dai is simply one option that looks good against the red brick.

Can I fly a drone under 250 g in Nha Trang without a permit?

Only if it is flown for recreation, within your line of sight and outside no-fly and restricted zones. The drone must still be registered with the police before use, and a Vietnamese guarantor for a foreign pilot does not replace registration.

Can I bring my drone into Vietnam in my luggage?

We have not confirmed which procedure applies to a drone carried in personal luggage. Ask customs at your arrival airport before you travel.
