What to Buy in Nha Trang: Food Gifts and Shopping Tips

Dried squid, fermented pork rolls, mango fruit leather (bánh tráng xoài) and a box of bird's nest are the classic gifts from Nha Trang. Here is where to buy them, roughly what they cost, how to pack them for the flight and which ones may not get past customs at home.

Nha Trang gifts come in two kinds. Some go straight into a suitcase: a bag of coffee, a pack of mango fruit leather, a conical hat. Others need a little planning. Semi-dried squid (mực một nắng) has to stay cold, nem chua from Ninh Hoa has to be stored as its label says, a bottle of fish sauce (nước mắm) needs its own box, and bird's nest is worth buying from the right shop.

Prices are reference figures from Vietnam Airlines' guide to Khanh Hoa specialties, published in September 2026, and list prices on the website of Yen Sao Khanh Hoa (Yến sào Khánh Hòa), the provincial bird's nest company, checked on October 13, 2026. Stall prices vary with grade, size and season.

Dried seafood: the best gift, and the hardest to carry #

Semi-dried squid is dried in the sun for just one day, so the flesh stays thick and tender; at home it is grilled or fried. The catch is that it is still moist. We suggest buying it on your last day, asking the shop to vacuum-seal and freeze it, then packing it in an insulated box with cold packs that meet your airline's rules. If you use dry ice, ask the airline first and use packaging that lets the gas escape; Vietnam Airlines accepts up to 2.5 kg of dry ice per passenger. If you are traveling for more than a day, fully dried squid, dried yellow-stripe scad or dried mackerel keep longer and weigh less.

Ask the price per kilo before anything goes on the scale, watch the reading, and ask which squid it is and how many to a kilo. Large tube squid and small squid sold under the same name differ a lot in price, so treat VND400,000-700,000 per kilo as a guide rather than the market rate. For packaged squid or crab snacks in a sweet-and-spicy glaze, check the production and expiry dates on the pack.

Nem chua, mango fruit leather and lighter snacks #

Nem chua is fermented pork wrapped in banana leaves and tied into bunches, like the one at the top of this page. Check the producer's storage instructions and use-by date. Buy only if you can keep the rolls at the required temperature throughout the journey. For most international visitors it is a snack to enjoy in Vietnam: it is a pork product, and several countries restrict those (see the customs section below). Grilled nem nuong (nem nướng) is better eaten on the spot, rolled in rice paper; see how nem nuong is served.

Packaged mango fruit leather and dried seaweed are easy to share; Cam Lam (Cam Lâm), south of the city, is known for the fruit leather. For palm-seed preserves (hạt đác rim), check whether the label requires refrigeration.

Bird's nest: how to buy the genuine thing #

Bird's nest products vary widely in price, so check both the brand and the seller before buying. "Yen Sao Khanh Hoa" is the brand of the provincial bird's nest company. Its range includes wild island nests, house-farmed Sanvinest nests and prepared bird's nest products.

List prices on the company's online store (checked October 13, 2026) show how wide the range is: VND9,018,000-13,500,000 for 100 g of whole wild island nest depending on grade, VND3,888,000 for 100 g of whole Sanvinest nest, VND200,000 for a box of six SunSanest drinks and VND67,000 for 20 bird's nest biscuits. The drinks and biscuits make perfectly good gifts on a smaller budget.

Where to shop #

New Dam Market

Three-story market next to the old round building, central Nha Trang

The old round Dam Market building closed on March 31, 2025, and trading moved next door to the new three-story Dam Market. It offers a broad range of dried seafood, fish sauce, sweets, coffee and fruit.

Specialty sellers in Nha Trang are used to foreign visitors asking what a product is made of, how long it keeps and whether it can go on a plane. Ask, and ask them to pack it for you. We suggest going in the morning, when stock is full and the heat is gentler; walk the whole floor first to compare prices.

Supermarkets are where to buy packaged gifts such as coffee, sweets, nuts and dried fruit, with prices on the shelf and no haggling. The Gold Coast branch is close to the Tran Phu (Trần Phú) beachfront, handy if you stay in the center; the 23/10 Street branch is on the west side of the city. Nha Trang night market

Near April 2 Square (Quảng trường 2 Tháng 4), evenings

The night market suits small souvenirs: hats, sandals, rattan bags, shell crafts and sand paintings. Our night market guide covers what to expect and how to bargain politely; buy dried seafood and bird's nest by day at the places above.

For fruit, Xom Moi market (chợ Xóm Mới) is busy in the morning and its sellers are used to explaining how to pick a good one. Fresh fruit is a gift for the hotel room or a domestic trip; most countries restrict fresh fruit at the border.

Paying and a few small tips #

Market stalls usually take cash or a bank transfer by QR code from a Vietnamese bank, while supermarkets take cards. Without a Vietnamese bank account, carry small notes; our guide to cash and cards in Nha Trang explains where to change money and use ATMs.

When buying dried seafood, ask the seller to split it into small vacuum-sealed packs, one per person you are buying for. Leave shopping for the morning you fly out if you like, but leave time: Cam Ranh airport is about 35 km from the center, so allow 45-60 minutes by car. See getting between Cam Ranh and town.

Taking it on the plane: fish sauce, smelly food and liquids #

The rules below are Vietnam Airlines'. On other airlines, including every carrier on a connecting route, check their own baggage page.

On international flights, liquids in hand luggage must be in containers of 100 ml or less, with no more than 1 liter per passenger. Fish sauce, fermented shrimp paste and honey therefore belong in checked baggage. Vietnam Airlines accepts up to 3 liters or 3 kg of fish sauce or other strong-smelling liquids per passenger, in sealed plastic bottles taped shut and filled to no more than 95%, packed in a taped foam box. It recommends checking smelly items in, and does not accept them on flights operated with ATR72 aircraft. Other strong-smelling food, such as durian, is limited to 5 kg and must be sealed in plastic.

On Vietnam Airlines domestic flights, there is no volume limit on liquids in hand or checked luggage, except for strong-smelling liquids (rules above) and alcoholic drinks, which have their own limits. Even vacuum-sealed dried seafood can leave a smell. Add a zip bag or airtight box and pack it between clothes.

Customs at home: check before you buy #

Food gifts have to clear quarantine in the country you fly to. Two examples:

South Korea. Travelers must declare meat and processed meat (ham, sausage, jerky, canned meat), egg products and dairy. These can only be brought in from a country that is allowed to export them, with a quarantine certificate from the exporting country. For pork and pork products from countries affected by African swine fever, failing to declare brings fines of KRW5 million for a first offense, KRW7.5 million for a second and KRW10 million for a third. We would leave nem chua and other pork snacks behind. Cooked or dried seafood is not subject to aquatic animal quarantine at Incheon airport.

Australia. On arrival you must declare food, animal products and plant material, or drop them in the bins at the airport. Declared goods are inspected: items that pose no biosecurity risk are returned, others may be treated, re-exported or destroyed. Giving false or misleading information can lead to an infringement notice of up to AUD7,280, and a visa may be cancelled. Bird's nest, dried seafood and nem chua all fall under food and animal products, so declare them.

For Russia, Japan, the United States, the UK, the EU and elsewhere, check your country's rules on bringing in food before you buy, especially meat, bird's nest and dried seafood. Sealed, labeled products with a receipt are easier to declare than loose goods from a stall.

What to buy in Nha Trang: quick answers #

What should I buy in Nha Trang as a souvenir?

Dried squid or dried fish for seafood lovers, mango fruit leather and dried seaweed to share around, and bird's nest or bird's nest drinks as a gift for family. Hats, rattan bags and shell crafts from the night market are easy small souvenirs.

Can I take fish sauce on a plane from Nha Trang?

On Vietnam Airlines, up to 3 liters or 3 kg per passenger, in sealed plastic bottles inside a taped foam box, preferably as checked baggage; ATR72 flights do not accept it. On international flights, cabin liquids must also meet the 100 ml container and 1 liter total limits. Other airlines have their own rules.

What should I check before taking food gifts home?

Check the destination's import conditions before buying. We recommend leaving nem chua behind when flying to South Korea. For Australia, declare food and animal products; declaration does not guarantee entry.
