Nha Trang Weather in December: Northeast Wind, a Cooler Sea and the Holiday Crowds

By late December, the streets of central Nha Trang are strung with Christmas lights and the cathedral on its low hill has been decorated for the season. Down on Tran Phu beach, on the windy days, the northeast monsoon pushes line after line of white water onto the sand and the flags on the lifeguard towers stand out stiff. The days are usually mild and cloudy, with bright spells long enough for a slow morning at a seafront café.

After November, the wettest month, December is a more comfortable time to be out on foot. What shapes a trip now is less the rain than the wind, the waves and the holiday crowds. If your dates can still move, compare the months across the year before you commit.

Nha Trang weather in December: less rain, more wind #

The first difference you notice is the number of full days you can spend outside. Days with almost no rain rise from about seven in November to around twelve. December rain is also less likely to settle in: in ten years of data, heavy rain never lasted more than three days in a row, while November had five four-day runs.

The wind goes the other way. On both average speed and gusts, December is the windiest month of the year in Nha Trang, with roughly ten days of gusts reaching 60 km/h (37 mph). It is usually lightest from the small hours until about 8 a.m., picks up from 9 and peaks around 1-2 p.m. On land that makes for breezy, pleasant middays; out in the bay, the waves build with it.

Nha Trang weather in December varies widely from one year to the next. December 2019 had about 30 mm of rain and was dry almost throughout; December 2016 had 511 mm, more than a typical November. Months ahead of a trip, the averages only tell you which way the odds lean.

The second half of December is not the dry season yet #

A common assumption is that the rain stops once December is halfway through. Ten years of data do not bear that out. December 1-15 averages about 119 mm and December 16-31 about 113 mm, with the same number of heavy-rain days in each half. Where the second half does better is in fully dry daytimes: about one day in two, compared with four in ten earlier in the month.

Which half is wetter changes from year to year. In 2022 the rain came almost entirely in the first week; in 2015 it arrived at the end of the month. The wettest December day in the series fell on Christmas Day 2024, at around 90 mm, a week and a half after heavy rain had flooded low-lying areas on the western side of the city.

The clear drop comes in January, which averages about 85 mm. If you have some flexibility, the first week of January is usually drier than the last week of December. The wind and waves do not ease straight away, though: January is still a northeast-monsoon month.

Swimming, boat trips and a cooler sea #

You can swim, but pick your time and your day. Marine model data for 2022-2024 put the bay at about 26°C (79°F) in December, roughly 4°C cooler than in May. It still feels pleasant in the water. Step out into the northeast wind, though, and you cool down fast, children especially, so a large towel or a light cover-up to throw on straight away is worth packing.

The waves matter more than the temperature. In October, close to nine days in ten have a highest wave under 1 m; by December it is about one day in six. Early mornings, while the wind is still light, are usually the calmest time in the water. From midday the surf builds and currents near the shore become harder to read.

Before heading in, the sea conditions tool gives a quick read on waves and wind for that morning. The flags and the lifeguards on the beach still have the final say: swim only inside the buoyed, patrolled area, and stay on the sand if a red or black flag is up.

Island trips are less exposed to heavy rain than in November, but the northeast wind can still keep boats in port. If you book island hopping, choose a shorter route that leaves early and is back before the afternoon wind.

If you get seasick, take something about 30 minutes before boarding, and bring a jacket, because sitting on deck in the wind is colder than it looks from shore. Water can stay murky after rain, so if snorkeling over coral is the main goal, the dry season is the better bet.

Christmas and New Year's Eve in Nha Trang #

The Christmas atmosphere centers on downtown. In 2025, a tall Christmas tree went up near the AB Central building, and the streets around April 2 Square, along with hotels and cafés, were all decorated, drawing young people and families out for photos from late afternoon. After a walk around the square, the Nha Trang night market is right next door.

The cathedral is a familiar stop on Christmas Eve. If you want to attend Mass or take photos without a squeeze, arrive early and walk or take a ride-hail car rather than looking for parking. The road up is a gentle slope, and on a crowded night comfortable shoes help.

On December 31, the city usually holds its New Year countdown at April 2 Square, with fireworks at midnight. For the 2026 countdown, the stage program ran past midnight, the fireworks lasted 15 minutes, and Vinpearl put on a separate display on Hon Tre Island.

Details for each year tend to be announced only a few days ahead. Last time, the stretch of Tran Phu around the square, between Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Le Thanh Ton streets, was closed to people and vehicles from midnight on December 30 until 12:30 a.m. on January 1. If your hotel is on that stretch, ask reception about access before booking an airport pickup.

When the fireworks end, a large crowd leaves the square at once and a ride can take a while to arrive; if you are staying nearby, walking back is usually quicker.

As for the weather, most December evenings are dry: only about three in ten see 1 mm of rain or more. In ten years of data, New Year's Eve had rain in three years, and only once was it more than a passing shower. A light rain jacket folded into a bag covers it.

Year-end trips: book the room early, the boat late #

Early December is still part of Khanh Hoa's low season, with easy rooms and quieter streets, a good fit for a slow trip. From about the third week, visitor numbers climb toward Christmas and New Year.

Over the last New Year holiday, many beachfront hotels and resorts at Bai Dai and Cam Ranh reported occupancy above 90% around New Year's Eve. Alongside domestic travelers, visitors from South Korea, Russia, China and Australia made up a large share. For Russian travelers in particular, winter around Christmas and New Year is peak season for Vietnam, and many book months in advance.

So split your bookings in two. Book early: rooms for roughly December 20 to January 2, especially sea-view rooms, plus flights if you are traveling on the first days of the holiday. Choose free-cancellation rates so you keep your options open. When weighing flights, trains and buses, remember that seats around the holidays go early.

Book late: island tours, tickets for the island theme park, diving. These depend on the wind and waves on the day, so confirm them once the forecast for the next day or two is clear. Before paying, ask whether a canceled boat means a refund or a new date.

Some hotels have charged a surcharge for Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. When you book, ask whether the rate for those nights includes any surcharge or a compulsory gala dinner. January 1, 2027 falls on a Friday, so the first weekend of the year is likely to be busy.

Cooler days for walking and eating #

Daytime highs sit around 26°C (80°F), about 6°C cooler than in summer. Places you would avoid at noon in summer are fine at any hour in December. The Po Nagar Cham Towers in the north of the city are one example: from the hill, you look down on the Cai River mouth full of fishing boats, Tran Phu Bridge leading back to the center, and Hon Tre Island beyond.

Nearby, the Hon Chong rocks take some impressive surf at this time of year. Watch from the walkway; do not climb out onto the rocks at the water's edge when the waves are big. The hot mineral mud baths north of the city also suit a cool, breezy day.

Evenings on the seafront turn cool in the monsoon wind, a good time for a long hotpot or a table of grilled seafood. When choosing what to eat in Nha Trang, keep in mind that rough seas keep fishing boats in, so seafood can be scarcer and pricier; ask the price per kilo before ordering. For dried seafood to take home, the new Dam Market has plenty of stalls to compare during the day.

What to pack for December #

Arriving from a Seoul or Moscow winter, you will find Nha Trang warm. If you are used to tropical heat, the seafront can feel chilly after dark. A few things worth bringing:

• A light windbreaker with a hood. Nights drop to about 22-23°C (72-73°F), and the sea breeze makes it feel cooler, especially at outdoor tables or on a boat.
• A large towel or cover-up to put on as soon as you leave the water.
• A packable rain jacket and a waterproof pouch for your phone on boat days.
• Sunscreen and sunglasses: the sky is often cloudy, but midday sunny spells are strong.
• Shoes with grip for the slope up to the cathedral and the stone steps at Po Nagar after rain.
• Seasickness tablets if you plan an island day.

Safety: monsoon surf and late-season rain #

December rain is lighter on average, but it can still be heavy. On the evening of December 15, 2024, downpours combined with water released from upstream reservoirs raised floodwater 0.5-1 m in low-lying areas on the western side of Nha Trang. A few days earlier, rocks and soil slid onto Pham Van Dong Street and the Cu Hin Pass on the road to Cam Ranh Airport, and were cleared the same morning.

If your flight is the morning after a night of heavy rain, leave the hotel earlier than planned and ask reception about the airport road. Never drive through floodwater, however shallow it looks. When heavy rain, flood or tropical depression warnings are issued for Khanh Hoa, follow the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and the instructions of local authorities.

On the beach, the monsoon wind can set up currents pulling away from shore. If one catches you, do not swim straight back against it; swim parallel to the beach first, and if you cannot get out, raise an arm to signal for help. On big-wave days, keep well back from the seawall edge when taking photos.

How the figures were calculated #

The temperature, rain and wind figures in this article come from ERA5 reanalysis data via Open-Meteo for central Nha Trang, covering all 310 December days from 2015 to 2024. An almost-dry day has under 1 mm of rain; heavy rain means 20 mm or more.

Wave height and sea temperature come from the same provider's marine model for a point in the bay. That series only starts in late 2021, so treat those numbers as a general guide.
