Nha Trang Weather in October: Rain Patterns, Sea Days and a Flexible Plan

In October, most mornings in Nha Trang stay fairly dry, and on many days the water is still as blue as late summer. Rain is more likely from midday into the evening. Some days clouds settle on the peaks of Hon Tre, the bay turns the color of pewter and a shower sweeps through town; other days the rain lingers into the night. When it clears by evening, the promenade turns cool and people drift back to the beach.

October sits in the middle of Nha Trang's rainy season, after the September changeover and before November, the wettest month of the year. Nha Trang weather in October is hard to call day by day, but a few trends are clear enough to plan around: mornings tend to be drier than afternoons, the second half is windier than the first, and heavy-rain days are few.

Nha Trang weather in October at a glance #

The number that worries people most when they check Nha Trang weather in October is the count of rainy days. Include every quick shower of 1 mm or more, and October has about 26 of them. That sounds like a month of rain, but on most of those days the totals are small. Days with heavy rain, 20 mm or more, average only three or four.

Temperatures are gentler than in summer: around 29°C by day, about 24°C at night. Humidity stays high, so pack light, quick-dry fabrics rather than heavy denim.

Every year is different, too. October 2023 brought about 152 mm of rain; October 2016 brought 416 mm. Treat Nha Trang weather in October as a trend, and leave your particular week to the forecast a few days out.

Why Nha Trang's rainy season runs late #

Nha Trang weather in October catches many visitors out, because Vietnam does not have one rainy season. In Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta the wet months are the summer months, and by October the rain there is winding down. For 2026, forecasters expect it to end early in the inner Mekong Delta, around mid to late October.

Nha Trang, on the south-central coast, runs on a different clock. The mountains to the west shelter this coast from much of the summer monsoon, and the heaviest rain comes later, with the northeast monsoon and passing storms. Combine Saigon and Nha Trang in October and you will see the south drying out just as Nha Trang gets wet.

Several direct routes now serve the area. Vietnam Airlines launched a daily direct Busan - Nha Trang service in June 2025, alongside its Seoul route, and since September 23, 2026, Vietjet has flown Moscow to Cam Ranh three times a week. Cam Ranh airport is about 35 km south of the city.

Early vs late October: the season turns #

Split October into two halves and the rainfall is almost identical. What changes is the wind, the temperature and the time of day the rain tends to fall.

October 1-15: a last taste of the dry season

The first half still carries some summer. The wind has not settled yet: some days it blows from the north, other days it swings around. Some middays the sun is still strong, and rain in this half leans toward the afternoon, with close to 40% of it falling between noon and 6 p.m. When towering clouds build over the western hills, a shower is often on its way.

Clear mornings and a calm sea are more likely in this half. If your dates are flexible and you want plenty of outdoor hours, it is usually the easier stretch to plan around.

October 16-31: the northeast monsoon arrives

In the second half, the northeast monsoon usually settles in. Gusts get stronger, it turns a little cooler, and more of the rain falls in the evening, overnight and early morning than earlier in the month: roughly half of it between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

For a beach trip, this is when swell builds more easily and boats may stay in port more often. Late October is also the doorway to November, when days with more than 50 mm of rain jump from about 0.2 to 1.9 a month. If your trip runs into early November, put the island day at the start.

When in the day the rain tends to fall #

Nobody can book the rain in advance, but ten years of hourly data show a few clear trends in Nha Trang weather in October. Roughly two out of three mornings are almost dry, and more than 60% of the month's rain falls between noon and midnight. These are odds, not a timetable: about one morning in three still sees rain.

Early morning is usually the most reliable window. Until about 9 a.m. the average wind is only 5-6 km/h, and the sea tends to be gentler than in the afternoon. Locals are in the water while the sky is still pale. For a swim, a beach walk or photos, aim for 5 to 9 a.m.

Midday brings the sea breeze, strongest around noon to 3 p.m. On clear days the sun can still bite, so this is the time for lunch, a rest at the hotel or an indoor stop.

Afternoon takes about a third of the month's rain. Sometimes it is one passing shower, sometimes rain that settles in until dark. If it catches you in a café by the beach, watching it cross the bay, the islands fading out and coming back, is its own way of seeing Nha Trang.

Evening after a wet afternoon is cool and damp, the streets still shiny. Rain at night is more common late in the month, so carry a poncho if dinner is far from your hotel.

How to read the forecast before and during your trip #

Look up Nha Trang weather in October on any app and you will see a rain icon on almost every day. That icon only means rain is possible at some point; it says nothing about when or for how long. The hourly view, with the chance of rain and the amount for each slot, is far more useful.

A forecast of a few millimeters for the day usually means scattered showers, while 20 mm or more is a day to move plans indoors. Strong gusts or a high-wave warning for the Khanh Hoa coast are your cue to check with the tour operator before heading to the pier.

Forecasts get less certain the further out they go. A week ahead, read them for the trend only; two or three days out is the time to pick your island day. Lines you may read online about Nha Trang weather in October, like "it rains all month" or "only in the afternoon", are broad impressions, and plenty of days break the pattern.

The sea and island trips: boats may stay in port #

For many travelers, the big question about Nha Trang weather in October is whether the island boats will run. Some days they will not. When wind and waves pass the safety threshold, or a storm or tropical depression is nearby, tourist boats are not allowed to leave the harbor. Locals often call it the sea being "closed". The decision comes from the authorities; your tour operator cannot overrule it.

So book an island tour differently than you would in the dry season. Don't prepay the full tour from home. Ask clearly what happens if the boat cannot sail, refund or a new date, and get the answer in writing, even a chat message. If a deposit is required, ask whether it comes back when boats stay in port.

On a four- or five-day stay, book the island trip for day two and keep days three and four as backups. Check the wind and wave forecast the evening before. If the sea in front of your hotel is full of whitecaps in the morning, the open bay is likely rougher still.

Swimming near the beach is still possible on many days. After rain, the water is often cloudy with silt from the Cai River, nothing like the clear water of March or April, so if snorkeling over coral is the goal, save it for the dry season.

What to pack for October #

On top of the usual beach things, a few items make rain and wind easier to deal with.

• A proper poncho or rain jacket. Umbrellas flip inside out in the sea wind, and a poncho works on a motorbike.
• A waterproof pouch for your phone, cash and passport, especially on boat days.
• Sandals with a back strap or quick-dry shoes instead of canvas sneakers; streets puddle fast after heavy rain.
• Light, quick-dry clothing, plus a thin jacket for breezy evenings late in the month.
• Sunscreen and a hat. On clear mornings the sun comes up strong and fast.
• Seasickness tablets if an island day is planned, taken about 30 minutes before boarding.
• A large plastic bag for wet things, and a change of clothes for young kids.

Rainy-day plans on dry land #

There is plenty to do close to the center when it rains. With two or three ideas ready, you will not spend the afternoon in your room waiting for it to stop.

Mud baths are the classic choice. Soaking in warm mineral mud while it pours outside has its own charm, and the mud bath centers north of the city are a short ride from downtown.

The Po Nagar Cham Towers (Tháp Bà Po Nagar) look their best the morning after a night of rain, when the old brick darkens and the air is cool. From the hill you look down on fishing boats crowding the Cai River mouth. The towers, a mud bath and the Hon Chong rocks sit close together and fill a half day.

The Museum of Oceanography near Cau Da pier is one of the easiest rainy-day things to do in Nha Trang, especially with kids: the tanks of live sea creatures and the halls of specimens are all indoors.

Food is the part the weather cannot spoil. A hot bowl of fish noodle soup on a rainy morning or banh can straight from the clay molds in the late afternoon, two of the Nha Trang dishes worth seeking out, taste better when it is cool out. Storms keep fishing boats in port, so seafood can get pricier; ask the price by weight first.

Cloud hunting is a September and October thing. Locals ride up Hon En mountain in the Vinh Phuong area, now Bac Nha Trang ward, leaving around 4:30 a.m. for sunrise. The thick sea of clouds usually forms after a night of heavy rain and melts away fast. The road is steep and slippery, so ride slowly; locals prefer manual motorbikes to scooters.

Low season: rates and where to stay #

For Khanh Hoa tourism, the stretch from September to early December is low season. With the rains, fewer domestic travelers head for the beach, and airfares and hotel rates are usually well below summer levels.

In mid-October 2024, the provincial tourism association ran a promotion: one free night per six for international guests, one per four for Vietnamese guests, and 10-20% off at many attractions and restaurants. There is no word yet on this year, so ask your hotel about long-stay offers.

Not everywhere is quiet. Late in the year Russian visitors arrive to escape winter, and hotels serving that market can stay busy.

Island resorts are quieter, but getting in and out runs on boat, speedboat or cable car schedules. On rough-sea days, ask the hotel how transfers work and allow extra time.

Safety: beach flags and storm news #

The October sea can change faster than an itinerary. In late October 2025, when storm No. 12 (Vietnam numbers its storms each year) churned up the sea, the Nha Trang Bay Management Board banned swimming in dangerous areas, especially along the Tran Phu - Pham Van Dong waterfront park, after lifeguards pulled two people from the water.

On the beach, swim only inside the buoyed zone where lifeguards are on duty. If you see a red flag, a black flag or a no-swimming sign, stay on the sand, however nice the sky looks. If a rip current pulls you out, do not swim straight back against it. Stay calm, swim parallel to the shore, and if you cannot get out, raise an arm and call for help.

Vietnam's weather service expects fewer typhoons and tropical depressions than usual in October-December 2026, against a long-term average of about 4.5 over the East Sea and 1.9 making landfall. Fewer does not mean none; one system passing close by is enough to bring heavy rain and big waves.

Three to five days before you travel, follow the storm and marine warnings from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, which has an English section. If a storm warning, sea closure or evacuation order is issued, follow the local authorities and your hotel, and drop every plan that involves the water.

The climate figures come from ERA5 reanalysis data via Open-Meteo for central Nha Trang, covering all 310 October days from 2015 to 2024. A rainy day means 1 mm or more, a heavy-rain day 20 mm or more; the daily rhythm comes from hourly data.
