Plan an island day as a group and everyone tends to want something different. One person wants to snorkel all day, another only wants a sun lounger, a third just asks where lunch will be lobster. There is no single best island in the bay, but there is usually one that suits you.

Why picking the right island matters #

Nha Trang Bay has 19 islands, large and small, and Hon Tre alone covers 32.5 km². That sounds like plenty of choice, but each island comes with its own style of day. The four-island tour is a full day hopping stops on a wooden boat, a dive trip is a morning underwater, and Diep Son is a long drive north timed around the tide.

An island day that matches your style is far more memorable. Someone who wants quiet may find a boat with a few dozen passengers and a loudspeaker tiring. A snorkeling fan will be disappointed by a tour that only sails past Hon Mun for a look. On a three or four-day trip, every day deserves a little planning.

How to play and how scoring works #

Six questions about your travel style: in the water or on a sun bed, a generous or a careful budget, where you are at 5am, which meal you would remember most, how many photos you take, and which water sport calls your name. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds.

Each answer gives 1 or 2 points to one or two islands. After six questions, the island with the most points is your result. Ties are settled by a fixed order, so if your answers sat halfway between two personalities, just take it again for fun.

The quiz needs no account and collects no personal data. Your result stays on your device unless you choose to send it to someone.

The 5 results, and how to turn yours into a real trip #

Hon Mun: for lovers of the underwater world

You are the person who asks where the coral is before unpacking. Hon Mun is the core zone of the bay's marine reserve and used to be Nha Trang's most famous dive site. One thing to know up front: swimming and diving at Hon Mun were suspended in June 2022 so the reef could recover, and no reopening has been announced.

The coral is doing better. Surveys from late 2022 to March 2023 put live coral cover on the island's north and southwest sides at around 74.5%. But recovering is not the same as reopened, and tours today only cruise past so you can see the island from the boat.

So where should a keen snorkeler go? Since June 13, 2024 the province has piloted diving at 4 other water areas: north of Hon Rua island, the artificial reef zone at Vinh Hoa, northeast of Tri Nguyen island, and the water between Bai Tranh and Bai Soi. When you book, ask which of these areas the tour visits, when it leaves and how long it stays at each site; many leave early and spend the morning at one spot.

If you want light snorkeling plus island stops, a shared four-island tour at VND500,000 to 950,000 per person is the cheapest option, with scuba charged separately on the spot. Water is usually clearest from about February to August. Fire jellyfish showed up around Hon Mun and Hon Bac in July and August 2026, and some tours still advertise "Hon Mun diving" without any reopening notice, so ask exactly where you will dive before you pay.

Hon Tam: an unhurried day on the island

You like a vacation with plenty of open space in it, enough for a sun lounger or a slow soak in warm mud. Hon Tam has a resort with mineral mud baths, sun beds and a bar, so everything is set up and all you have to do is rest. It suits couples, families with older relatives, or friends who want to slow down after a few busy days.

A full day works well: over to the island in the morning, a swim before the sun gets strong, lunch and a nap, a mud soak in the afternoon, then back to the mainland before dinner. Half a day works but feels rushed. If you want a bit more action, jet skis and parasailing at the bay's beaches are charged separately, so agree on a price before you climb on.

There is no price listed here because the fee to visit Hon Tam varies from one website to the next; ask the island resort directly about tickets and boat transfers. Explorers may find the pace slow after a few hours. If you would rather skip the boat, the mainland mud baths are a good option too: I-Resort, about 4 km from the center, opens 8am-5:30pm, and the Thap Ba center is at 438 Ngo Den street.

Diep Son: walking on the sea

You are drawn to unusual landscapes and happy to get up early for a good photo. Diep Son is in the Van Ninh area in the north of Khanh Hoa province, known for a sandbar roughly 800 m long linking three islets. The sandbar only surfaces at low tide, and people walking along it look as if they are strolling across the sea.

Getting there means driving from Nha Trang to the Van Gia pier, then taking a small boat out. This is not a shared tour inside the bay but usually a private day trip, so give it the whole day. Leave very early, aim to arrive as the tide goes out, and if you still have energy on the way back, detour to Doc Let beach north of Nha Trang for a swim.

Boat and car costs depend on who you hire, and we do not yet have prices reliable enough to list. The tide matters most: once the water rises, the sand path disappears under the sea. Ask the boat owner for the tide times on your exact date rather than relying on old tables online. Bring strapped sandals, a hat and water.

Binh Ba: a trip for seafood lovers

For you, a great meal is the best part of any trip, and the "lobster island" nickname fits that taste. The catch: you cannot go right now. Binh Ba sits in Cam Ranh Bay inside a military base security zone and has stopped all tourism. Treat this result as one to save for later, pending an official reopening.

Meanwhile, the seafood rafts and fishing villages inside Nha Trang Bay make a good substitute. The four-island tour stops at a fishing village for a seafood lunch on a raft, though that meal is usually just okay. Back in town, seafood places along Tran Phu street charge roughly VND150,000 to 1,000,000 per dish, so ask the price per kilo before anything goes on the scale.

Places to eat for seafood lovers are in what to eat in Nha Trang. The province has told businesses not to promote or run tours to Binh Ba and Binh Hung, so if you see one still for sale, do not book it.

Robinson / Bai Soi: notifications off, waves on

All you need is a quiet stretch of sand and the sound of the sea. This result is for people who like quiet beaches, clear water, one book and zero interruptions. Robinson is the personality; the easiest real address is Bai Soi, the early-afternoon stop on the four-island tour.

The water between Bai Tranh and Bai Soi is also one of the 4 pilot dive areas, so a gentle snorkel is right there. Shared tours do run on a group schedule, though, and you are often called back to the boat just as you settle in. To stay longer at one beach, charter a private boat; for groups of 8-10 or more, the per-person cost can come close to a shared tour.

If you charter, agree on the stops, times and any extra fees in writing. The "quiet" beaches in the bay get busier on weekends, so a weekday is more pleasant. If you would rather skip the boat entirely, Doc Let, 46-49 km north of the center, has white sand and is usually much quieter than downtown.

Early risers who picked the sunrise answer can also try the cloud hunt on Hon En mountain in September and October, best around 4-6am, though it is better not to ride up in the rain.

Season matters as much as status. From February to August the sea is usually calm, rain is light and tours run more reliably. October to December brings storms, and island boats can be cancelled at short notice when the sea is rough, so choose bookings you can change.
