Nha Trang Travel Guide: Getting There, 3-Day Itinerary and Costs

In Nha Trang, the sea is just across the road. Early in the morning, people are already swimming off Tran Phu beach while the sun is still soft. A first trip here usually only snags on small things: not planning around the rainy season, a room a little too far from the water, or no plan for the long ride in from the airport.

Where is Nha Trang and why go? #

Nha Trang is a beach city in Khanh Hoa (Khánh Hoà) Province on Vietnam's south-central coast, about 400 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The bay is the defining feature of the landscape: about 507 square kilometers of water holding 19 islands. The largest, Hon Tre (Hòn Tre), covers 32.5 square kilometers and fills the view straight out from the main beach.

In June 2003, Nha Trang Bay joined the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, the second Vietnamese bay after Ha Long. Many of the classic experiences here are tied to the water as a result: boat trips around the bay, snorkeling over coral and long seafood dinners.

Addresses can be confusing right now. On July 1, 2025, Khanh Hoa merged with Ninh Thuan into a new, larger Khanh Hoa Province, and the former Nha Trang city became four wards: Nha Trang, Bac Nha Trang, Tay Nha Trang and Nam Nha Trang. Plenty of signs and map pins still use the old names.

Best time to visit: when is the sea calm? #

Pick your season before you look at flights. Averaged over 2015-2024, February to April is the driest stretch, with only about 40-55 mm of rain a month. The wet season runs September to December and peaks in November at around 370 mm.

That makes January through August the usual window for calm water and steady sun, which is what island tours need. From September to December there is more rain, and some spells of big waves force boat trips to be postponed. Getting there: flights, trains and buses #

The transport notes in this Nha Trang travel guide start from Ho Chi Minh City, which has all three options. Flying is fastest. Nha Trang is served by Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR), with direct domestic links. Domestic fares move with the season, so booking early and avoiding holiday peaks usually gives you more choice of flight times.

The international list keeps growing too. The newest is a direct Moscow - Cam Ranh route from Vietjet, which launched on September 23, 2026 with three flights a week.

The train is slower but lovely if you have time. Saigon - Nha Trang covers roughly 400 km in seven to nine hours. In 2025, fares ran about VND240,000-400,000 for a soft seat and VND350,000-700,000 for a sleeper berth, and they shift from one sales period to the next.

Sleeper buses from Ho Chi Minh City are usually the cheapest option, at the cost of a longer ride. If you drive yourself, add tolls to the budget: since August 14, 2026, all five North-South expressway sections between Quang Ngai and Nha Trang charge a fee.

From Cam Ranh airport to the city #

This part surprises a lot of first-timers. Cam Ranh airport lies about 35 km south of central Nha Trang, a 40-45 minute drive along a coastal road. You land, and the beach is still a proper transfer away.

The cheapest ride is the airport bus or shuttle. It leaves roughly every 30 minutes and costs VND50,000-60,000 per person (September 2026). A taxi is about VND250,000-450,000 per car, depending on size and company.

Once you are downtown, the beachfront promenade is flat and easy to walk. For longer hops, such as the Po Nagar towers in the north or Cau Da port in the south, you can hail a taxi or book a car through a ride-hailing app.

Where to stay #

If you want to walk to the sea every morning, look for a room along Tran Phu (Trần Phú) street. Cross the road and you are on the sand, and many hotels have rooms facing the bay, though rates are higher and climb again in summer. Hotels a few streets inland suit you better if budget comes first.

The backpacker quarter sits one block behind the beachfront. It is packed with mid-range hotels, restaurants and bars, five to ten minutes on foot from the water. It is handy, but nights tend to be louder. Groups of friends usually like it more than families with small kids.

For quiet, look north near Hon Chong (Hòn Chồng) or south toward the Cau Da port area. Rooms are cheaper and the beaches emptier, but dinner usually means a taxi ride. Three days in Nha Trang: one in town, one on the bay #

The itinerary in this Nha Trang travel guide is built for a first trip of three days and two nights. Spend day one in the city. Check in, wait for the heat to ease, then swim at Tran Phu beach in the late afternoon. The Po Nagar Cham towers (Tháp Bà Po Nagar) and the Hon Chong rocks are close together, so pair them. Give day two to the bay. The four-island boat tour is the easiest thing to book on a first trip. Hon Mun (Hòn Mun) is a look-from-the-boat stop for now, because diving there was suspended in June 2022 so the coral could recover.

Budget: what things cost #

The budget section of this Nha Trang travel guide goes line by line rather than giving one grand total, since flights and hotel rates change with the season. These are the costs worth planning for.

Sightseeing is inexpensive. Entry to the Po Nagar towers and the Hon Chong viewpoint is VND30,000 each, a rate in place since January 1, 2023. Doing both in one afternoon costs VND60,000 a head.

The biggest single ticket is usually VinWonders. An adult day ticket is VND1,050,000 including the return cable car, or VND700,000 if you enter after 4 pm (September 2026). If you only want a few rides in the afternoon, the late ticket makes more sense.

Food is the most flexible line. At 90 Nguyen Huu Huan street, a bowl of banh canh noodles still costs VND8,000, the same price since 2020. Street dishes generally run VND30,000-60,000. A seafood dinner by the beach depends on what you order.

Beach and boat-tour safety #

The city has eight designated swimming zones, marked with buoys, equipped with rescue gear and watched by lifeguards. Outside them, water that looks calm can still hide strong currents.

Rip currents, which pull swimmers away from shore, are behind many of the incidents. In just six days, February 17-22, 2026, beach lifeguards helped 20 swimmers in trouble, and five needed emergency care. In August 2026, fire jellyfish also turned up in numbers around Hon Mun and Hon Bac, leaving painful, blistering stings.

If you see tours to Binh Ba (Bình Ba) or Binh Hung advertised, skip them. Both islands sit inside the security zone of the Cam Ranh military base, and since June 2026 the provincial tourism department has told companies to stop promoting or running tours there.
