14 Days in Vietnam With Four Hotel Bases
If you have two weeks for a first trip across Vietnam, we suggest four hotel bases and one night on a train. Keep the final day close to your departure airport.

Choose your arrival and departure cities first. For a first Vietnam 2 week itinerary, we suggest arriving in Hanoi and leaving from Ho Chi Minh City (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh), or reversing the entire route. Four accommodation bases and one overnight train give you enough variety without turning every morning into another checkout.
This plan counts arrival as day 1 and departure as day 14. It includes a northern day trip, central Vietnam, a coastal stop, and a day in the Mekong Delta (đồng bằng sông Cửu Long). Before committing to flights, settle the entry permission for the passport you will use. A domestic connection and an international arrival require different amounts of time.
Allocate the nights before adding attractions #
| Days | Plan | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | Hanoi, with Ninh Binh (Ninh Bình) on day 3 | Hanoi, 3 nights |
| 4-6 | Fly to Da Nang (Đà Nẵng), stay in Hoi An (Hội An) | Hoi An, 3 nights |
| 7 | Transfer to Da Nang Station for Nha Trang | Train, 1 night |
| 8-9 | Nha Trang, with one main sightseeing or beach day | Nha Trang, 2 nights |
| 10-13 | Ho Chi Minh City and a Mekong Delta day trip | Ho Chi Minh City, 4 nights |
| 14 | Depart Vietnam | No additional night |
The total is 13 nights, including the train. These are our suggested allocations, not a packaged tour schedule. If your first flight arrives late, have dinner and sleep. The plan leaves room for that without asking you to start sightseeing immediately after immigration.
Keep the first three nights in one room #
Use day 2 for a manageable neighborhood walk and one cultural attraction. We would not add an overnight side trip to Sapa (Sa Pa) to this route. It introduces a substantial journey away from your southbound direction, while the rest of the trip already asks you to move between several regions.
Ninh Binh is around two hours from Hanoi by road or rail, before local connections. Return to the same hotel that evening and leave your main luggage there. One boat route and one land stop in Ninh Binh make a useful day; two different rowing-boat tours do not add enough variety to justify rushing lunch.
For an overnight bay cruise, substitute Ha Long Bay (Vịnh Hạ Long) for Ninh Binh. Keep two Hanoi nights and spend the third on the boat. Check the actual return-to-port time before choosing your next flight. Boats must be authorized to depart; postpone for thunderstorms or heavy rain, and avoid alcohol before and during the trip. Pregnant travelers, young children, and anyone with a medical condition should seek medical advice first.

Give Hoi An three nights, or make a deliberate swap for imperial history #
On day 4, fly to Da Nang and continue to Hoi An by car, allowing roughly 1-1.5 hours for that road connection. The Hanoi flight takes roughly 1 hour 25 minutes, but we would reserve most of a half-day for checking out, reaching the airport, collecting bags, and getting to your next room. A flight duration is not the amount of usable vacation time you lose.
Keep day 5 for Hoi An and day 6 for either more time there or a Da Nang outing. Choose among Da Nang’s city, peninsula, and mountain activities according to what you actually enjoy. A theme-park day should not also contain a peninsula drive and an ambitious old-town evening.
If imperial history matters more than an unhurried old-town stay, replace the three Hoi An nights with two in Hue (Huế) and one in Hoi An. Rebook the arrival flight to suit that order, then choose a dated rail or road connection toward Da Nang. We prefer a daytime train for coastal scenery, with the onward car arranged separately. This version involves another checkout, so we would choose it for a clear interest in Hue rather than a desire to collect more place names.

Use one overnight train, then take a quiet arrival day #
On day 7, travel from Hoi An to Da Nang Station and board a southbound sleeper. Da Nang to Nha Trang is roughly a ten-hour rail journey; use the times printed for your selected service when arranging pickup. Reserve a berth and check the arrival date as well as the departure date. We would leave the following morning free of tours.
If you sleep poorly on moving vehicles, choose a flight to Cam Ranh and replace the train night with a hotel night. That keeps the overall night count unchanged. Compare baggage and both airport transfers before judging the price difference. A cheaper ticket that requires an awkward connection is not automatically the better use of a short trip.
Day 8 is for settling in and recovering. Day 9 can hold your main outing. The Nha Trang plan built around arrival and departure times helps you select the part that fits two nights. For swimming, stay inside the buoyed zone while lifeguards are present and follow the flags. Keep a land-based alternative you would enjoy.
Prefer cooler air and cafes? Substitute Da Lat (Đà Lạt) for Nha Trang and redesign the connection accordingly. Do not keep the Nha Trang train simply because it is already on the draft route. We would choose one of these destinations, since adding the other takes time from both.

Put the delta excursion between city nights #
Fly from Cam Ranh to Ho Chi Minh City on day 10. The flight itself is around an hour; allow separately for the road from Nha Trang to the airport. We would use day 11 for Ben Tre (Bến Tre), roughly two hours away by road, returning to the same city hotel. It is a more focused day-trip choice than rushing to Can Tho (Cần Thơ) solely to include a floating market.
Reserve the whole day for the delta and confirm the pickup, route, and return with your transport provider. If the program includes a boat, ask about correctly sized life jackets and weather cancellation. Travel only with authorized departures, without alcohol, and postpone water activities during thunderstorms, heavy rain, or flood warnings. A land-based version needs to be agreed before payment.
Day 12 belongs to the city. Day 13 is deliberately light, giving you time for laundry, shopping, or moving the delta excursion. If an overnight Can Tho visit matters to you, use night 11 there and return on day 12. We would not put a long delta transfer immediately before the international flight on day 14.
Reversing the route does not reverse the weather #
March or early April is our first choice for this all-region version. November is a different proposition: northern city walks are often more comfortable than in summer, the central heritage coast remains exposed to heavy rain and floods, Nha Trang is in its rainy season, and the south is moving toward drier weather. Two weeks is too short to expect a regional rainy season to end simply because you arrive later.
Use the regional seasons to choose which stops deserve your nights. For a late-year beach-focused trip, we would reduce central Vietnam and allocate more time north or south. Check the route as well as the destination when warnings apply. A road replacement is not automatically safe when rail service is disrupted by flooding.
South to north works when flights, family visits, or your main activity favor that direction. Reverse the blocks and retain a buffer in Hanoi before departure. In summer, keep outdoor plans early and take a proper midday break in either direction.
With ten days, remove the separate coastal stop #
Keep days 1-3 in Hanoi, days 4-6 in Hoi An or Hue, and days 7-9 in Ho Chi Minh City, with a delta day. Leave on day 10. Fly between the three regions and remove Nha Trang and its overnight train. You now have three accommodation bases and nine nights.
If caves are your main interest, a two-night Phong Nha stay should replace another block. In the longer version, use the coastal allocation for it and reorder the central connections. The Hanoi-to-central-Vietnam rail journey and Hoi An transfer are worth considering together when deciding where to break the trip.
Build a budget from explicit spending limits #
Here is a worked example for two people sharing a room. These are chosen allowances, not quoted hotel rates or a promise that every travel date will fit them. The train version has 12 hotel nights.
| Allowance | Per person | Assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | VND4,800,000 | 12 nights at VND800,000 per room, divided by two |
| Food and drinks | VND4,200,000 | 14 days at VND300,000 |
| Intercity travel and connections | VND4,000,000 | Replace with dated quotes |
| Attractions and local transport | VND2,000,000 | Adjust for selected activities |
| Total before contingency | VND15,000,000 | Excludes international flights, visa, insurance, and shopping |
A 15% reserve adds VND2,250,000, giving VND17,250,000 per person in this example. An overnight cruise, resort, or specialist cave expedition needs its own replacement figures. Solo travelers must recalculate room and private-car costs instead of using the shared total.
Before paying, work backward from the international departure. Put the actual arrival date beside every transport booking, confirm where you sleep each night, and include the trip from the station or airport to your room. Only then decide whether another attraction still fits.
Where should someone join the group halfway through?
Choose a city already on your flight route. Agree on room arrangements, shared costs, and who holds each booking before tickets are bought, so the main group does not need to backtrack.
Should two people share one large suitcase?
We prefer a bag each person can lift independently and a small overnight bag for the train. Split essential clothing between the two main bags so one delayed suitcase does not leave both travelers without a change.
How do we plan for different interests within the group?
Agree on one shared activity each day and leave a separate session for individual choices. Set a meeting time and pickup point, and decide who carries shared tickets. Every meal and visit need not involve everyone.
