Ninh Binh (Ninh Bình) Day Trip from Hanoi: Trang An or Tam Coc

Ninh Binh is close enough to Hanoi (Hà Nội) for a day trip: about 100 km, mostly on the expressway. Pick one boat ride, Trang An (Tràng An) or Tam Coc (Tam Cốc), add one more stop and be on the water by mid-morning.

At the Trang An wharf, wooden rowing boats sit side by side, each with a few orange life jackets. Once you push off, the boat glides into flooded valleys walled by sheer limestone and slips under cave ceilings so low that the rower tells you to duck. A day in Ninh Binh is built around a few hours on the water like this.

Is Ninh Binh worth a day trip? #

Yes, if you are happy to leave things out. Map estimates put the drive at about 1.5 hours each way in light traffic; the real time depends on your pick-up point and traffic. Buses and limousine vans usually take a little over two hours (CafeF, April 2026), and a boat ride adds two to three hours. That leaves room for lunch and one more stop: the climb at Mua Cave (Hang Múa), Bai Dinh (Bái Đính) pagoda or the ancient capital of Hoa Lu (Hoa Lư).

We would stay a night if you want to climb Mua Cave early while it is cool, if you come during the rice harvest, or if you are traveling with young children or older relatives. Many visitors fit Ninh Binh into a longer loop of northern Vietnam with a night on a Ha Long Bay (Hạ Long) cruise and the overnight train or sleeper bus up to Sapa; give each its own day.

Trang An or Tam Coc? #

For a first visit we lean toward Trang An, for its wide, quiet waterways and temples set deep among the karst. Tam Coc is closer to Mua Cave, so it suits a day with both a boat ride and a climb.

Choosing a Trang An route and time

Trang An has three boat routes. According to Kenh14 (October 2026), route 1 leans toward caves, while routes 2 and 3 stop at more temples. Stops can change, so ask at the ticket counter which routes are running and where they go. In the rainy season, rising water in the caves sometimes suspends a route.

On weekends and holidays the wait can exceed an hour by mid-morning; setting off between 7:30 and 9am, or in the early afternoon, is calmer. Tickets are sold from 7am to 5pm on weekdays and 6:30am to 5pm on weekends (site notice, April 2026). Skip the last boats, around 4:30pm: the ride lasts at least two and a half hours, and in autumn and winter it gets dark early, so much of the trip would be in darkness.

Adding Mua Cave, Bai Dinh or Hoa Lu #

Despite the name, Mua Cave is a viewpoint, not a boat trip, about 5 km from Tam Coc and 6 km from the Trang An wharf (measured on the map). Nearly 500 stone steps, steeper as you go, lead up Ngoa Long (Ngọa Long) Mountain, and from the top you look down on the Ngo Dong River curling through the fields of Tam Coc. Tickets are VND150,000 for anyone taller than 1 m.

Bai Dinh, about 14 km from Trang An, is a sprawling hillside pagoda complex with electric shuttles from the visitor area; the return shuttle costs VND150,000 for adults and VND100,000 for children 1-1.3 m (since February 15, 2026). The ancient capital of Hoa Lu is smaller and quieter, with VND20,000 tickets, and only about 5 km from the Trang An wharf, so it makes an easy hour.

Our pairing: Trang An with Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh, Tam Coc with Mua Cave. Do not squeeze Mua Cave and Bai Dinh into one boat day; they are about 22 km apart and each needs a couple of hours on foot.

How to get to Ninh Binh from Hanoi #

A group day tour is the easy option for solo travelers and couples. Ask which site and boat route you will do, the pick-up and return times, the group size, and whether the price covers boat tickets, Mua Cave, the Bai Dinh shuttle and lunch. If asked for a deposit by bank transfer, check who you are paying first.

By train

North-south trains stop at Ninh Binh Station, about 10 km from the Trang An wharf and 7 km from Tam Coc; SE7 and SE5 take about 2 hours 15 minutes. A soft seat for November 5, 2026 cost VND120,000-132,000; book on dsvn.vn or at the station. The return SE6 starts its run in Ho Chi Minh City (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh), so check that it is on time before you leave the wharf, and keep a bus as a backup.

By bus, limousine van or car

Buses to Ninh Binh still leave from Giap Bat (Giáp Bát) bus station (VietNamNet, October 2026). Limousine vans are smaller, with roomier seats, and many pick up within the city; ask whether you will be dropped at the bus station or the wharf.

A private car with driver suits families and groups of three to six: you set the times and can stop at both the wharf and Mua Cave. If you drive, avoid holidays and Tet (Tết), when the expressway often backs up. Foreign drivers need a suitable Vietnamese license or an IDP recognized in Vietnam, carried with their national license. Motorbikes are banned from expressways and must use national roads; we would not ride there and back in a day.

A sample day #

By train, Trang An and Hoa Lu:

  • 6am: SE7 leaves Hanoi Station, due in Ninh Binh at 8:13am; then about 10 km by car to the Trang An wharf to buy tickets.
  • Around 9-9:30am: board the boat, depending on when the train arrives and the queue at the wharf; the ride takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • 12:30-1:30pm: lunch; mountain goat (dê núi) and crispy rice (cơm cháy) are local specialties.
  • 2-3pm: Hoa Lu, or a café break if the sun is fierce.
  • 4:55pm: SE6 leaves Ninh Binh, due in Hanoi at 7:14pm.

If the train is late or the wharf is busy, drop Hoa Lu first rather than cutting it fine for the train.

By private car or limousine van, Tam Coc and Mua Cave:

  • 7am: leave Hanoi; reach Tam Coc around 9am if traffic is light, for a two-hour boat ride.
  • 11:30am-3pm: lunch and a break from the heat.
  • 3:30-5pm: climb Mua Cave in the softer afternoon light, then head back to Hanoi.

When to go #

The rice along the Ngo Dong River at Tam Coc turns gold around late May and early June, when the lotus pond below Mua Cave blooms. Harvest dates shift from year to year, and this is also when the wharf is most crowded. From late October to December, water lilies turn the river at Tam Coc pink, open from around 7 to 10am, so take a morning boat.

Averages from Open-Meteo data for 2015-2024 make June the hottest month, with daily highs around 34°C; July to September are the wettest. October to December is cooler and gradually drier, good for both the boats and the climb. The first lunar month is festival season, and Bai Dinh is packed with worshippers, especially around its 15th day.

Safety on the boats and at Mua Cave #

Life jackets are handed out at the wharf; wear one, fastened, for the whole ride, even when the water looks glassy. Stay seated in the middle of the boat, duck when the rower warns of a low cave, and do not stand up for photos or reach out to the rock.

Climbing Mua Cave at midday in summer is exhausting. Go early or late, with water, a hat and shoes with good grip. If you feel dizzy or faint, rest in the shade; if that does not help, get assistance and seek medical care. The steps are far more slippery after rain. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant or find stairs difficult, ask your doctor before tackling nearly 500 steps.

Rowers at Tam Coc may not sell goods or press passengers to buy during the ride (Ninh Binh Department of Tourism, via Thanh Nien, February 2024); each boat is numbered in case you need to report a problem. Tipping is up to you, and the usual ways to avoid being overcharged apply at the wharves too.

Ninh Binh day trip FAQ #

Can I do both Trang An and Tam Coc in one day?

Yes, with a private car and a very early start, but the two boat rides take about 4.5 to 5 hours, plus 3 to 4 hours of driving, leaving almost no time to eat or rest. To see both, stay overnight.

Is Tam Coc or Trang An better with young children?

Tam Coc is shorter, which suits children who get restless; Trang An takes longer and has more low, dark caves. Ask for a child-size life jacket before boarding, seat your child between two adults and bring water and a hat.
