Nha Trang Cathedral (Nhà thờ Núi): Hours, Mass Times, Dress Code and Etiquette

Nha Trang Cathedral (Nhà thờ Núi), officially Christ the King Cathedral, welcomes visitors from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. and still holds Mass every day. For sightseeing, allow 30-45 minutes between services; weekdays are easier to plan around. Clothing should cover your shoulders and knees.

Look up from the Nga Sau (Ngã Sáu) roundabout and a gray bell tower with a four-sided clock rises above the rooftops. Trains pull into Nha Trang station at the foot of the hill. At the top stands a Gothic-style church close to a century old, where the first Mass of the day begins before sunrise.

Locals call it the Mountain Church (Nhà thờ Núi), the Stone Church or the Nga Sau church. Its official name is Christ the King Cathedral (nhà thờ Chánh tòa Kitô Vua), the mother church of the Diocese of Nha Trang.

Mass times and when to visit #

The Mass times below are the parish schedule published in 2021. Some parish reports from 2026 confirm a 5 p.m. service; check the remaining times with the parish or on the board at the church.

DayMass (2021 schedule)Tip for visitors
Monday-Friday4:45 a.m., 5 p.m.Easiest 7-10 a.m. or 3-4:30 p.m.
Saturday4:45 a.m.; 5 p.m. is the Sunday vigil MassSame as weekdays
Sunday5, 7, 9:30 a.m., 4:30, 6:30 p.m.; adoration at 3 p.m.Services through the day; weekdays are easier for sightseeing

Many travel sites list a 3 p.m. Sunday Mass. According to the parish, that hour is Eucharistic adoration: not a Mass, but people are praying inside, so treat it like one.

We like a weekday morning best, before the heat builds and while the grounds are quiet; at midday there is little shade on the walk up.

Getting up the hill #

From April 2 Square (Quảng trường 2 Tháng 4) on Tran Phu (Trần Phú) Street it is a walk of almost 2 km through busy traffic, so on a hot day a ride-hailing car makes more sense. Type "Nhà thờ Núi" as the destination and get out at the gate on Thai Nguyen Street. The open-top sightseeing bus also stops here.

The main way up is a sloping road with statues of the apostles along the route; there is also a flight of stone steps winding through the trees. With older relatives or a stroller, take the sloping road and go slowly. After rain, both the slope and the steps can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip rather than flip-flops.

Inside and around the grounds #

Inside, two rows of tall columns hold up pointed vaults, and light comes through blue, red and yellow stained glass on both sides. Fourteen paintings of the Stations of the Cross line the walls.

Outside, the arched gallery along the side of the church is a shady spot on a sunny day. Below the hill, on the roundabout side, Ave Maria Square has a white statue of the Virgin Mary in front of a long carved relief.

Attending Mass if you are not Catholic #

You can sit in on a Mass even if you do not understand Vietnamese. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early and take a seat near the back or by a door, so you can leave quietly if you need to. The congregation stands, sits and kneels at different points; standing and sitting along with everyone is enough. When people go forward for Communion, stay in your seat if you are not Catholic and let others pass.

Photos: the best light #

The gallery and interior suit the morning, when the light is still soft. For the outside, the 3-4:30 p.m. weekday slot is best: low sun warms the gray walls. To fit the whole bell tower in, stand in Ave Maria Square and tilt up; if you shoot from the roundabout, stay on the sidewalk and off the road. The same afternoon, you could continue to Hon Chong (Hòn Chồng) for coastal photos.

For wedding photos or any shoot with a photographer, props or video, ask the parish office first (its phone numbers are on the parish page of the diocese website) and stay clear of Mass times.

Christmas, Tet and the feast day #

Christmas and Lunar New Year services follow separate schedules; check the parish announcement for your travel dates. The parish page says that since 2011 its Christmas Eve vigil and Mass have been held each year in Ave Maria Square below the church. As of October 20, 2026, we had not seen the Diocese of Nha Trang publish this year's time or place. If you plan to be there on December 24, stay within walking distance and plan around parking.

In 2026, both the January 1 Mass and the Mass on the first morning of Tet began at 5 a.m. Sunday, November 22, 2026, is the feast of Christ the King, the patronal feast of the cathedral and parish; avoid that day if you want quiet grounds.

Pairing it with nearby sights #

If an overnight train gets you into the station early, leave your bags at the hotel and come back here before the sun gets strong.

For an easy morning, go up to the cathedral at 7 a.m., then head to Long Son (Long Sơn) Pagoda around 8 (about 1.2 km on foot) to climb the steps to the white Buddha. From there it is about 1.8 km to the new Dam Market (chợ Đầm) for dried seafood before lunch; in strong sun, take a car between stops. The Po Nagar Cham Towers (Tháp Bà Po Nagar) are across the Cai (Cái) River and fit better into another half-day with Hon Chong.

A short history #

French priest Louis Vallet began building the church in 1928 on a small hill called Bong (núi Bông). It was finished in 1933 and dedicated to Christ the King. The gray walls look like solid stone, hence the "Stone Church" name, but the main material is cast blocks of cement mixed with crushed stone.

In 1960, when Nha Trang became a full diocese, the church became its cathedral. Father Vallet died in 1945 and is buried at the foot of the hill, to the right of the way up.

Nha Trang Cathedral FAQ #

Is there an entrance fee at Nha Trang Cathedral?

Neither the parish page nor the Khanh Hoa (Khánh Hòa) digital tourism portal lists one (checked October 20, 2026). In 2019 the church committee proposed charging foreign visitors VND10,000 per visit, subject to provincial approval; we have not seen any report that it took effect. If someone asks for money at the gate, ask the church's security staff or the parish office what it is for first.

Can I visit Nha Trang Cathedral in the evening?

Visiting hours are 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. The parish's 2021 schedule lists a Sunday Mass at 6:30 p.m.; confirm the current time if you plan to attend. After dark, you can still see the bell tower from Ave Maria Square or the sidewalk around the Nga Sau roundabout.

Is it worth visiting if I am not religious?

Yes, as a short stop. A Gothic-style church on a hill is an unusual sight in a beach city, the interior is calm, and it sits next to the train station, so it pairs easily with Long Son Pagoda and Dam Market.
