Is Phu Quoc (Phú Quốc) Worth Visiting? Pros, Cons and the Best Time to Go
Phu Quoc is worth visiting if you want a relaxed beach holiday in the dry season, roughly November to April. If you're after old streets and walkable street food, or can only travel in July to September, another destination will likely suit you better.

On Phu Quoc's west coast, the sun sets straight into the sea rather than behind mountains. At the southern end of the island, Sao Beach has shallow, clear water over white sand. Those two images bring many people here, but to see them at their best you need the right season and the right base.
Who Phu Quoc suits, and who it doesn't #
We think Phu Quoc is most worth visiting for couples and families who want to spend most of the trip on the beach and by the pool, between December and March: one base, a morning swim when the designated area is open and conditions allow, the sunset in the evening, and a day or two for Hon Thom (Hòn Thơm) or the small islands in the south.
If you want to walk out in the evening and find somewhere to eat, Nha Trang or Da Nang (Đà Nẵng) is easier. Phu Quoc suits a resort pace, with a ride out to a different beach each day.
Phu Quoc pros and cons #
👍 Pros
- From October to April, the sea off the west coast is calm on most days.
- White-sand beaches in the south and sunsets over the sea on the west coast.
- Theme parks and water parks for families; outdoor activities still depend on weather and operating conditions.
- Fish sauce with geographical indication status and pepper to take home.
👀 Cons
- Heavy rain from May to October; boat trips can be suspended when the sea is rough.
- The main areas are roughly 20-30 km apart; changing area for sightseeing usually means a ride.
- Few old streets to wander; much of it is newly built.
- Construction for APEC 2027 is under way across the island, including at the airport.
- The night market has left its old site; its new location and reopening date were unconfirmed as of October 25, 2026.
Best time to visit Phu Quoc #
Both ends of the dry season, November and April, are still fairly wet. Phu Quoc's rainy season does not line up with central Vietnam's, so the 12-month rainfall table for all three will help you choose between Phu Quoc, Nha Trang and Da Nang by travel month.
| Months | Average rainfall | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Dec-Mar | 40-69 mm (1.6-2.7 in), 10-14 days with rain | Driest, west coast calm on most days; busiest at Christmas, New Year and Tet (Tết) |
| Apr, Nov | 136-179 mm (5.4-7 in), about 20 days | Changing season, still some showers |
| May-Oct | 344-501 mm (13.5-19.7 in), 27-30 days | Rainy season; west coast roughest in July-September |
Modeled Open-Meteo data, 2015-2024, around Duong Dong (Dương Đông); a day with rain means 1 mm or more.
From May to September the southwest monsoon blows straight onto the west coast, and modeled wave data shows far fewer days with offshore waves under 1 m (3 ft) than in the dry season. Heavy rain can flood the streets too, as in central Duong Dong on the evening of September 22, 2026. In December, while central Vietnam is still rainy, Phu Quoc pairs well with a cool, dry stretch in the north.
The 30-day visa exemption: what it covers #
Since July 1, 2020, foreigners entering Vietnam at Phu Quoc have been exempt from a visa and granted a 30-day stay (Law No. 51/2019/QH14). The exemption is tied to the place, not to a list of nationalities.
If you enter under Phu Quoc's island-only exemption, it does not cover onward travel to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi (Hà Nội) or anywhere else on the mainland. Check whether your full itinerary qualifies for another visa exemption or requires a visa; British citizens, for example, can currently visit Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days (GOV.UK, September 2026). If your route connects through another Vietnamese airport, ask your airline whether you will clear immigration there; if so, you need the same documents as on any other trip.
Without another exemption, consider getting a visa in advance if you want a fallback in case a medical emergency or a cancelled flight takes you to the mainland. Adding the mainland anyway? Check passport validity and how e-visas work.
Things to do in Phu Quoc, area by area #
The south: Sao Beach and Hon Thom
Sao Beach runs for more than 7 km (4 miles), with shallow water stretching a long way out; Kem Beach (Bãi Kem) is close by. From the station in An Thoi (An Thới), a cable car crosses the An Thoi islands to Hon Thom. According to the Sun World site (October 24, 2026), the island's two parks, Aquatopia and Exotica, close around 4:45 p.m. and the afternoon cable car service ends at 5 p.m., so don't plan to watch the sunset from the island.
The cable car and park ticket is good value with children who love water parks; if you only want the view from the cabin, an afternoon on Sao Beach is more relaxing. In the evening, Sunset Town (Thị trấn Hoàng Hôn) and Kiss Bridge (Cầu Hôn) in An Thoi draw crowds for the sunset.

Duong Dong and Long Beach
Duong Dong is the island's old center, close to the airport, with plenty of places to eat and stay. Long Beach, Bai Truong (Bãi Trường) in Vietnamese, runs about 20 km (12 miles) south along the west coast, so any clear evening is a sunset evening. Don't confuse it with Bai Dai (Bãi Dài) in the north, whose name also means "long beach".

The north: Bai Dai and the theme parks
Bai Dai is in the northwest. Around Ganh Dau (Gành Dầu) are Grand World, VinWonders and the safari park. Families with young children can fill a day or two here; if you only want the beach and some quiet, there is no need to come this far north.
What to eat and buy #
The Phu Quoc night market on Bach Dang (Bạch Đằng) Street in Duong Dong has left its old site. In April 2026 the local government said it would find a new one, but as of October 25, 2026 the new location and reopening date were unconfirmed, so ask your hotel. At live seafood stalls, ask the price per kilo, watch the weighing and agree on the dish before it is cooked.

Fish sauce, nuoc mam (nước mắm), is the souvenir that truly belongs to the island. Phu Quoc fish sauce was granted geographical indication status by the European Union in 2012. Visit a traditional fish sauce house to see the wooden fermenting vats, buy on site, and pick bottles that name the producer and show the geographical indication. Flying home? Pack it according to Vietnam Airlines' rules for fish sauce or your own airline's.

Getting around and costs #
From Duong Dong it is roughly 25-27 km (16-17 miles) to Sao Beach or the An Thoi cable car station, and about 22 km (14 miles) to Bai Dai (map distances, rounded). We suggest choosing your base by what you will do most: the south for Sao Beach and Hon Thom, Duong Dong for food and easy airport runs, the north for Bai Dai and the theme parks. Only ride a scooter if you hold a license that is valid in Vietnam, and avoid flooded roads.
The table covers only a day trip to Hon Thom from Duong Dong and scooter rental, not flights, rooms or meals; prices and hours can change by date.
| Item | Price guide and source date |
|---|---|
| Hon Thom cable car return, Aquatopia, Exotica | VND850,000; children from 1 m to under 1.4 m VND700,000 (Sun World, October 2026) |
| The same with lunch buffet | VND1,150,000; children VND900,000 (Sun World, October 2026) |
| Taxi, Duong Dong to the cable car | VND250,000-300,000 each way (Sun World estimate, October 2026) |
| Scooter rental | VND120,000-150,000 a day (Sun World estimate, October 2026) |
Adult cable car fares apply from 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in); children under 1 m ride free.
Sea safety and boat trips #
Only swim inside the buoyed area when lifeguards are on duty, and follow the flags; in storms or rough seas, stay on the sand. In the southwest monsoon, west-coast beaches take the waves head-on, and calm-looking water can still hide a rip current pulling away from shore.
Speedboat trips to the small southern islands call for the most caution in the southwest monsoon. On the afternoon of July 11, 2026, a speedboat carrying 32 tourists capsized near Hon May Rut Ngoai (Hòn Mây Rút Ngoài) in strong winds and rough seas and 15 of them died; police later also charged the person who had assigned an unqualified driver.
From April to August, jellyfish are common at the calmer beaches around Ganh Dau, Cua Can (Cửa Cạn), Bai Thom (Bãi Thơm), Ham Ninh (Hàm Ninh) and An Thoi; the local marine protected area advises against swimming after rain or at high tide. If a sting leaves you short of breath, dizzy or in spreading pain, get emergency care right away.
If you book rooms or tours through social media, check who you are paying before sending a deposit.
Phu Quoc: your questions #
Which province is Phu Quoc in now?
Since July 1, 2025, Phu Quoc has been a special zone of An Giang Province, after Kien Giang (Kiên Giang) Province merged into An Giang, so newer addresses read "Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang".
How many days do you need in Phu Quoc?
We suggest four or five days for a first visit: two or three nights in the south, the rest in Duong Dong or the north. Keep one day free of boat trips so you can move things around if the weather turns.
Is November a good time to visit Phu Quoc?
Yes, especially the second half: in modeled data for 2015-2024, it gets only about two-thirds of the first half's rain. Totals vary a lot from year to year, so check the forecast before you go and keep boat trips flexible.
