Ha Giang Loop (Hà Giang): Route, Itinerary, Easy Rider or Self-Drive
The Ha Giang Loop is a ride of just over 300 km through Vietnam's far-north karst mountains. Allow three to four days; four gives you more time for stops. Decide first who rides: self-drive only makes sense with a license valid in Vietnam and real experience on long mountain passes.

At Tham Ma, National Route 4C folds into two hairpins on a grassy slope. Higher up, on the Ma Pi Leng (Mã Pí Lèng) Pass, the road is a ledge cut into the cliff above the jade-green Nho Que (Nho Quế) River. Pull over somewhere safe to take in the view.
The route, distances and itineraries #
From Ha Giang city, Route 4C climbs the 7 km Bac Sum (Bắc Sum) Pass to the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, then runs on through Yen Minh to Dong Van, past Tham Ma, Pho Cao (Phố Cáo) and the Vuong (Vương) family palace at Sa Phin (Sà Phìn). Allow three to five hours from the city to Dong Van. Distances in this guide are measured on OpenStreetMap and rounded.
Dong Van to Meo Vac is only about 22 km, mostly over the Ma Pi Leng Pass. Since October 10, 2026, the path to the "Death Rock" (mỏm đá tử thần) photo ledge has been fenced off because the cracked rock could collapse; it stays shut until the authorities confirm it is safe. The Lung Cu flag tower is a detour of about 25 km each way from Dong Van, about an hour and a half. On the way back, the Meo Vac to Mau Due section is rougher, so take it slowly.

Ha Giang Loop in 4 days
Four days spread out the outward ride, but the final day is still about 145 km. Whichever plan you choose, rest before riding if you did not sleep properly on the night bus.
| Day | Route | Overnight, notes |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Ha Giang city - Bac Sum Pass - Quan Ba - Yen Minh, about 95 km | Sleep in Yen Minh |
| Day 2 | Yen Minh - Tham Ma - Vuong Palace (Sa Phin) - Dong Van, about 50 km, plus Lung Cu | Sleep in Dong Van; a Saturday night here puts you at the Sunday market |
| Day 3 | Dong Van - Ma Pi Leng - Meo Vac, about 22 km | Sleep in Meo Vac; take your time on the pass |
| Day 4 | Meo Vac - Mau Due - Ha Giang city, about 145 km | Heavy rain or landslides: stay another night |
With an extra day, consider breaking the return in Du Gia (Du Già), a valley of Tay (Tày) stilt houses with a waterfall nearby. Check the approach roads before choosing your route.

Easy rider or self-drive? #
We only suggest riding yourself if you hold a license valid in Vietnam for motorbikes and are comfortable on a semi-automatic on long mountain descents. If you lack either, consider a licensed tour with an easy rider, a local driver who carries you on the back.
Which licenses work, and your insurance
Vietnam's Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety accepts a suitable Vietnamese license, or an international driving permit (IDP) from a 1968 Vienna Convention country carried with your national license for the same class. Separate agreements apply in some cases, such as for Korean-issued IDPs. On the UN treaty list (checked October 22, 2026), the United Kingdom is a party; the United States, Australia, India and Canada are not, so their IDPs are not recognized through the convention. If unsure, ask the authority that issued your license before you fly.
Australia's Smartraveller warns that insurers will likely deny claims if you are unlicensed or hold the wrong class; check your policy's motorcycle section, including riding as a passenger.
Booking an easy rider: what to ask
After a 19-year-old British traveler on an easy rider tour died in a crash on March 29, 2026, the Tuyen Quang tourism department required, from mid-April, a licensed guide with each group throughout and contracts naming the driver, vehicle, route and rest stops; motorbike rental shops may not sell tours themselves. Before you pay, ask:
- Does the company hold a travel license, and does the name on the contract match the account you are paying? Check the company and its payment details before sending money.
- How big is the group, and is there a sweep rider at the back? Some experts suggest no more than eight guests.
- Are full-face helmets and travel insurance included, and may drivers drink in the evening?
On the road, if your driver tailgates, overtakes on blind bends or smells of alcohol, ask them to slow down or stop, and call the company.
Riding it yourself: bikes, descents, fog and rain
Most visitors rent a 110cc semi-automatic; we would not take a scooter on these grades. On long descents such as Bac Sum and Ma Pi Leng, slow down before each bend and shift down for engine braking instead of riding the brakes until they overheat. Before leaving the shop, check the brakes, tires and lights. In winter fog at the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, use your lights, keep your distance and go slowly. Much of Route 4C is unlit, so arrive before dusk.
Vietnam has a zero limit: riding with any alcohol in your blood or breath is prohibited. Homestay dinners often come with corn liquor, so whoever rides tomorrow should say no.

Best time for the Ha Giang Loop #
Buckwheat flowers usually peak in October and November; in 2026, communes sowed about 400 hectares in three batches to stretch the bloom into December. The 12th Buckwheat Flower Festival is planned to open at 8pm on October 25, 2026, in Dong Van commune; check the provincial announcement close to the date. Tham Ma has had traffic jams on flower-season weekends (November 2025).
Rice harvest dates vary across the region, so check the valley you plan to visit. In winter, Dong Van can drop to 1-2°C with frost and occasional snow; on frosty mornings, wait for the sun before riding. Peach and plum blossom comes in January and February. In the storm season, usually June to November, keep a spare day. Dong Van and Meo Vac hold markets on Sunday mornings; the Khau Vai (Khâu Vai) love market meets once a year, on the 27th day of the third lunar month.

Ha Giang Loop costs #
| Item | Typical price | As of |
|---|---|---|
| Easy rider tour, 3-4 days | VND4-5 million per person on average, including driver, meals and lodging | April 2026 |
| Motorbike rental in Ha Giang city | VND150,000-300,000 per bike per day, fuel extra | April 2026 |
| Homestay in Dong Van | VND400,000-1 million per room; dorm beds VND100,000-250,000 | August 2023 |
| Homestay in Meo Vac | VND250,000-1.5 million per double room; dorm beds VND80,000-200,000 | September 2023 |
| Bus, Hanoi to Ha Giang | VND200,000-300,000 one way | April 2026 |
Homestay prices date from 2023, so confirm when you book. Nho Que River boats run only when the pier confirms they are operating; wear the life jacket.
Getting there from Hanoi and back #
Overnight sleeper buses and limousine vans run from Hanoi to Ha Giang. Confirm your operator's exact pick-up address when booking, and ask whether you can rest somewhere if you arrive before dawn. For the return, the April 2026 timetable had departures at 2pm (arriving around 9pm) and 9pm (around 4am); check current times. As of October 22, 2026, the Tuyen Quang - Ha Giang expressway was not fully open. If your itinerary takes you back to Hanoi, you can rest there before continuing to Sa Pa by bus or train.
Permits, paperwork and the new province name #
Maps now show post-merger names such as Ha Giang 2 Ward and Dong Van commune. As of October 22, 2026, we have found no new visitor paperwork linked to the merger.
The loop runs close to the Chinese border at Lung Cu and Meo Vac. In June 2026, Tuyen Quang police checked foreigners' passports, visas and temporary residence declarations in 17 border communes and gave guidance on border-area entry permits. We have not found an official list of roads that need one, so carry your original passport (never leave it as a bike deposit) and ask your tour company or host before heading to the border sections.
Photos and etiquette in the villages #
The geopark is home to 17 ethnic groups, and more than 60% of residents are Hmong (Mông). Ask before photographing people, especially older people and children, and put the camera away if they shake their head. Rammed-earth houses are homes, so wait at the gate unless invited in; in a homestay, ask before entering the kitchen or photographing the household altar. Ride slowly through villages.
At markets, ask before photographing a stall. To help, buy from adults at the market or your homestay. At a few stops such as Tham Ma, children offer to braid hair and then ask for money; decline politely and do not give cash or gifts.
Ha Giang Loop FAQ #
Can I do the Ha Giang Loop in two days?
You can, but it is rushed. We would go by car or with an easy rider: day one up to Dong Van, day two over Ma Pi Leng to Meo Vac and back to Ha Giang city, skipping Lung Cu and Du Gia.
What happens if I ride without a valid license?
Valid means a suitable Vietnamese license, or a 1968 Vienna Convention IDP carried with your national license for the same class; separate agreements apply in some cases. Without one, on a bike up to 125cc the fine is VND2-4 million under Decree 168/2024, the bike can be impounded, and your travel insurer will likely refuse any claim. Ride pillion with a licensed easy rider company or hire a car with a driver in Ha Giang city instead.
Do I need to book ahead in buckwheat season?
Yes for Friday and Saturday nights and for festival week, because homestays with a view tend to fill up on weekends in flower season. Pay any deposit only into an account in the name of the homestay.
